Mackintosh back in the chair at NFU

Mackintosh, who farms beef, sheep and arable on the west coast of Cumbria, said: “I am delighted to have been re-elected chairman of the national livestock board and I am looking forward to working with the new officeholder team and John Hore as my new vice chairman.

“There are some big challenges ahead in the coming months and years such as CAP post 2013 and the ongoing challenge of TB. It will be vital that we work to get the best deal for British livestock farmers and have our world-leading standards given more recognition within the global market place. This will mean better engagement with Europe over some of the challenges facing the sector.

“The future of animal movements will be another key issue for the NFU livestock board, as will the push for a review of EID and progress on a more realistic, transparent and functioning supply chain.

“Livestock production continues to be attacked by single issue pressure groups that fail to recognise the complex interactions between climate change and the need to produce more food for a growing population. I will continue to deal with misinformation and promote the sector’s ability to develop rounded solutions.”

New vice chairman John Hore, a tenant farmer from near Bristol who also runs beef and sheep, said: “I am delighted to be voted into the role of vice chairman and look forward to working closely with the chairman and the new board to face the many challenges that have been highlighted.”
