Freedom Food Expo week dominated by meat enquiries
Freedom Food has seen a wide range of livestock rearers, foodservice businesses and butchers at its Food & Drink Expo stand this year, according to its consumer marketing manager.
A recently as February, the RSPCA reported welfare standards were on the rise within UK livestock production where it’s Freedom Food scheme had seen a 46% increase in the number of animals produced under its guidelines.
Freedom Food consumer marketing manager Caroline Gauntlett has now said she has seen a wide range of sectors declaring interest in the scheme as animal welfare becomes a top priority for the food industry.
She said: “We’ve had everything from a few member farms, a food procurement representative from the Welsh Assembly Government, quite a few contract caterers and catering butchers all trying to source Freedom Food product of one type or another, typically chicken and quite a bit of pork. We have also had some retail butchers as well and some restaurateurs.”
Gauntlett added that the most common query she has been getting at the Food & Drink Expo this year is where companies can source Freedom Food meat and that their customers are always asking for it.
“It is lovely as we are seeing it from retail side and the research that the IGD recently did in January showed that animal welfare is still a key concern of the consumer and clearly now it is beginning to filter through other levels of the food business which is really nice to see.”
