Skipton lambs in big demand
West Yorkshire butchers showed a commitment to providing customers with choice cuts from some of the best Spring lambs by buying the main prizewinners at at Skipton Auction Mart.
West Yorkshire butchers have again demonstrated a commitment to providing their customers with choice cuts from some of the best Spring lambs in the county when purchasing the main prizewinners at the May prime lambs show at Skipton Auction Mart on Monday.
The champions, a pen of three 45-kilo Charollais lambs exhibited by Martin Preston, of the Bingley-based Robston Partnership, were purchased by regular Skipton buyer Mick Etherington on behalf of Dan Woodend, of Woodends Butchers in Adel, Leeds. They made the top price of £102 per head (227p per kilo).
Etherington also purchased the reserve champions, the first prize pen of 42-kilo Suffolk lambs shown by Graham Fort, of G&A Fort, Brighton House Farm, Steeton, for butcher brothers Mark and Darren Spauls for their two shops in Burley-in-Wharfedale and Cottingley. The selling price was £100 per head (238p per kilo).
Both butchers'shops have been regular past buyers of Skipton prime lambs champions.
Graham Fort was also third in the Suffolks class, his 38-kilo charges selling for £84 per head (221p per kilo) to show judge Richard Binns, of RC&B Binns Butchers, Saltaire. The 43-kilo runners-up from Mark Evans, of Steeton, sold for £90 each (209p per kilo) to Stuart Price Butchers, Crossflatts, Keighley.
