Customer dons apron for National Butcher Week

 - Published:  17 March, 2010

Midland's butcher Aubrey Allen is set to give one lucky customer the ultimate insight into the trade during National Butchers' Week, by turning them into a butcher for the day.

The Leamington Spa based business invited customers to tell them why they should be a butcher for the day, before selecting a winner to join the team in the shop.

The concept was designed as part of National Butchers' Week to highlight the importance of understanding the role of the butcher in the high street, and the skills and knowledge it can offer. Jayne Neal, a Leamington based sales manager, was selected and will be joining Aubrey Allen's master butcher Martin Crombie this Friday, swapping her suit for a hat, coat and apron and getting her hands dirty, helping to break down some carcases.

She said: “ I am really excited about being part of the back of the shop team having loved visiting Aubrey Allen for many years as a customer. I would like to thank Aubrey Allen for giving me this wonderful opportunity.”

Meanwhile, as part of the week, the business also set three local schools the challenge to create an exciting new sausage recipe. Having been shown a sausage making DVD in class, the kids set about brainstorming ideas for the ultimate sausage.

The winning school, St Peter's Catholic Primary, Augusta Place, Leamington, were then invited into the shop to see their ideas made into reality, before smapling the end production.

Simon Kelly, Aubrey Allen shop manager, said: "We loved involving the children in this event and always welcome schools to work with us on raising children's awareness of good food."

The winner, "Joe's Lamb and Goat Cheese Sausage" will now be on sale in the shop throughout the rest of this week, and the first 10 customers to quote National Butchers Week were given free packs.
