Welsh Lamb smashes £100m export mark
The important role that Welsh Lamb plays in the Welsh economy has been highlighted by new figures, Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales’ (HCC) has revealed.
Statistics show that the value of Welsh Lamb exported in 2009 soared to nearly £110m, a rise of almost £20m on 2008.
The reputation of Welsh Lamb among countries around the world continues to grow year-on-year, with more leading hotels and restaurants demanding it on their menus, HCC added.
Bill Joyce, HCC marketing manager, said: “This growth in exports of Welsh Lamb is great news for the Welsh red meat sector and the Welsh economy as a whole.
“Welsh Lamb is a brand renowned throughout the world for its quality and is helping to further boost the profile of Wales.”
“HCC works hard to develop market opportunities for Welsh red meat processors to get their product into foreign markets and will continue our efforts to further boost the exports of Welsh Lamb around the world.”
HCC has already visited the Middle East this year as part of its international marketing campaign. Staff attended the Gulfood fair in Dubai with a Welsh Lamb processor to build on the markets that have already been established in the region.
HCC will also be attending events in Spain, Singapore and France in 2010 to promote the unique qualities that Welsh Lamb offers to consumers.
