Peter Mellors takes Bpex West Midlands award
Mellors Farm Butchers was crowned overall champion in the West Midlands in the 2009/10 Bpex challenge.
Forty-four butchers from the surrounding region entered the event, at The Three Counties Showground in Malvern.
From 241 products put forward, nearly half achieved a gold award, scoring at least 95 out of 100.
Newark-based butcher’s Mellors won with a traditional-style pork pie, and will now go through to a national final, taking place in June at a London venue.
Peter Mellors said: “It is a real boost for the business. I’m excited about the final and the fact that we now have two products entered – I’m keeping my fingers firmly crossed.”
Bpex butchery and product development manager Keith Fisher added: “The standard of products entered was exceptionally high. We hope the awards continue to boost the profile of many businesses and the independent retail butchery trade.”
H Dayus Family Butchers in Worcester won 15 gold awards, a silver and bronze award, in addition to the three category champion titles.
