Which? gives FSA a positive rating
Consumer publication Which? has given the Food Standards Agency (FSA) an overall positive review to celebrate the Agency’s 10th anniversary.
Which? graded the FSA out of 10 in 12 categories – and it received 9/10 for transparency and consumer-focused policy-making and 8/10 for meat safety and BSE.
A Which? spokesperson said: “We have looked at key food policy areas, assessing where the FSA has made real progress, but also where it has fallen short of expectations. We have also highlighted key issues that we hope the Agency will make a priority for the next 10 years.”
Meanwhile, the FSA only received 4/10 for new food technologies. Which? said: “The FSA needs to be more pro-active in understanding the implications of new technologies, such as nanotechnologies. It should proactively address regulatory and research gaps, helping to drive them, rather than waiting for, EU initiatives.”
The Agency was also urged to put in more action on hospital food, as it was awarded a score of 5/10 for food in public institutions.
The Which? spokesperson added: “With an independent board and its use of advice from independent scientific committees, the FSA has transformed the way food issues are dealt with in the UK. Going forwards, the Agency must ensure that this transparent approach applies to every area of its work.”
