English sheep farmers shun new electronic tags

At least 44% of new lamb slaughter tags ordered last month by English sheep farmers were of the manual type, not part of the new EID system.
The Livestock Auctioneers' Association (LAA) has expresssed grave concerns about the rate of the switch from manual to electronic tagging among sheep farmers, which appears to demonstrate a relunctance over the new system.
“If farmers don’t use electronic slaughter tags this year, it will restrict the number of people who are prepared to buy their sheep,” warns LAA Executive Secretary Chris Dodds.
“We are advising producers that all their sheep should be tagged with electronic slaughter tags.
Electronic tags cost around 50p each more than manual tags.
