Export success for Welsh lamb

Stand officials said companies from countries across the Middle East were “beating a path to HCC’s stand at Gulfood in Dubai” attracted by the provenance of the Welsh Lamb brand.

HCC market development manager Bill Joyce said: “Welsh Lamb is already a favourite in the shops and restaurants of the United Arab Emirates. During Gulfood we have already had serious enquires from retailers and caterers from many other countries, including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan, Yemen and Iran.

“The positive comments made by these visitors underline research that we have undertaken over the past few years that show the provenance of Welsh Lamb makes it a brand that consumers trust.”

Gulfood, which ran from 21-24 February, is said to be the largest trade fair in the Middle East, attracting more than 3,000 companies from 72 different countries.

Joyce added: “Exports in 2008 were valued at £91m, and we confidently predict that the final figure for 2009 will top £100m.

“Our biggest export market is Europe, with France leading the way. But emerging markets such as the Middle and Far East means that there is a growing appetite for Welsh Lamb around the globe.

“Export success is good news for everyone involved in the red meat industry in Wales, as growing demand pumps more money back into the Welsh economy.”
