Scots invest £250,000 in food industry education
The Scottish government has put forward £250,000 to educate children about the food chain, the benefits of eating seasonal produce and career opportunities within the food industry.
The package includes funding the Royal Highland Education Trust to ensure 1,800 primary school children are involved in food and farming visits over the next 12 months.
There will also be funding for 1,000 pupils at this year’s Royal Highland Show and backing for the Scottish Food and Drink Federation national programme to consider the food and drink industries as a career choice.
Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead said: “In order to create a strong, safe, prosperous and sustainable Scotland we need to revalue our relationship with food and Scotland’s food producers.”
Last year the Scottish Parliament published a ‘Recipes for Success’, Scotland’s first ever national food and drink policy.
