Head teacher quits in sheep slaughter row

Andrea Charman, of Lydd Primary School, near Romney Marsh, had set up a small farm next to the school, in order to teach pupils about where food came from.

Schoolchildren had voted 13-1 in favour of slaughtering one of the maturing sheep and for raffling it in the local town, helping the school buy some pigs. School governors backed the plan.

However, after six months of threatening letters by a group of parents, and a long campaign on Facebook, Charman has resigned.

Typical comments included claims by parents that their children had been traumatised, and that they would need counselling as a result of the sheep killing.

Charman said she had resigned for “personal reasons”.
