The European Commission has raised the age at which vertebral column (VC) has to be removed from beef from 24 to 30 months.
The new legislation, which came into effect on Saturday (26 April), was made based on advice from the European Food Safety Authority following three months of statutory scrutiny by the European Parliament.
It will provide a welcome relief from costs for Britain's beef industry and allow butchers to sell beef on the bone.
John Cross, chairman of EBLEX Ltd, said: "This is a much- awaited decision which will be warmly welcomed by the whole industry.
"Not only does it give the shopper greater choice in the range of beef products on offer, but it also provides an opportunity for smaller butchers' shops and processors in particular to provide top quality, mature beef on the bone which is very much in demand."
