Butcher of the Year reveals expansion plans
Sussex Butcher of the Year Bob Young is to launch a second shop and ramp up production as part of ambitious expansion plans.
The award-winning operator is set to open a store showcasing his pies and sausages in the centre of Eastbourne, adding to his Meads Village butchers in the Meads suburb of the town. Currently Young sells 150 pies and 200lb of sausages a week.
Sausage production will be increased at the new store, with a medium-sized foodservice delivery company also likely to take on his products for sale in the Sussex coastal area.
“I’m really taking advantage of this award, with lots of activity over the coming year,” said Young. “We really want to shout about what we’re capable of.”
Young will take on two more staff, adding to the couple of butchers he employs in Meads.
Other stores may follow in the Brighton-Eastbourne area. “I’ve only got 10-15 years left in my career,” said the 52-year-old, “so I want to make them count.”
Young puts his success down to finding locations where he doesn’t have to “pile it high and sell it cheap”.
“If you do that, the supermarkets will get you. I’ve aimed for decent quality, and they cannot compete with us on service and local suppliers. The locals are proud of their area, and they want the smaller shops to succeed,” he added.
