Green toolkit to help food operators
A new toolkit to help food and drink manufacturers improve their environmental performance has been launched by the Environment Agency.
The toolkit provides businesses with template forms and guidance on managing their environmental impact.
Andrew Kuyk, director of sustainability at the Food and Drink Federation, said some companies did not have the expertise or resources in-house to run complex environmental management systems.
“Access to vital information, guidance, simple templates that can be adapted to any business environment, and easy-to-use checklists will be highly beneficial to all businesses,” he said.
Cutting down on the amount of waste they produce – 2.5 million tonnes in 2008 - is a particular challenge for food and drink manufacturers, according to the Environment Agency. The toolkit provides template forms to help them re-examine waste management procedures, including whether waste materials can be recovered or reused. It also aims to help firms draw up a ‘pollution incident management plan’ which identifies potential risk areas and to take steps to minimise the chance of a pollution incident occurring.
The toolkit can be downloaded at www.environment-agency.gov.uk.
