Hampshire council launches butcher contest

 - Published:  21 January, 2010

Independent Hampshire butchers and meat producers are being encouraged to enter the Great Hampshire Sausage, Pie and Ready Meal Competition.

Categories include sausages, hot and cold pies, bacon, ready meals and barbecue products, which are judged by a team of professional sausage-makers. Entrants are encouraged to think local, using added ingredients sourced from Hampshire, such as beer, cider, cheeses and chutneys.

Last year, Simon Broadribb, of Uptons of Bassett in Southampton, fought off stiff competition from 30 butchers and livestock farmers to win the title of supreme champion.

Tim Brock, manager at organiser Hampshire Fare, said: “This exciting competition puts the spotlight on the quality and choice available locally through farm shops, independent butchers and at Hampshire farmers’ markets. The national judges are always very impressed with the quality of the products.”
Butchers and meat producers wanting to enter the competition held on 17 February should contact Tim Brock on 01962 845999 or email tim.brock@hants.gov.uk.
