McDonald’s supplier awarded safety prize
McDonald’s beef and pork patty manufacturer Esca Food Solutions has been awarded the British Safety Council’s (BSC) Sword of Honour, the most prestigious international health and safety accolade.
Esca processes raw pork and about 8,000 cattle a week at its Scunthorpe site, generating blood and fat, which increases the risk of slipping for its 171 workers.
Esca general manager Gary Drane said: “We have controls put in place to reduce the likelihood of slipping, which include full assessments of safety footwear, trials of different anti-slip soles and training for cleaners with regards to COSHH and correct cleaning materials to be used. The implementation of these controls has had a positive effect and the number of slips on-site and injuries resulting from a slip have been significantly reduced.”
Nina Wrightson, BSC chairman of the trustees, said: “Esca Food Solutions has clearly shown the vital contribution that leadership and workforce involvement make to the achievement of exemplary health and safety performance.”
