UK food retailing is dominated by the ‘big four’ – Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco – but there are about a dozen other smaller, regionally located multiple trading groups around the country. In total there are some 4,500 stores varying in size from a few thousand sq ft up to nearly 150,000sq ft. Despite the relatively small number of store groups it is a hugely competitive sector.
