Just 30 years ago there were more than 2,500 abattoirs operating in the UK. Today there are less than 300. Of these some 50 firms slaughter most of the meat found on supermarket shelves but the remaining small and medium sized plants provide a valuable local service in their region of the country. Many have an excellent reputation for the quality of the work they carry out.
