The UK is estimated to be the second biggest producer in the EU after France, producing in the region of 1,500,000 tonnes cwe of poultry meat a year. Supermarkets and multiple stores account for nearly 80% of retail sales. Sales through independent butchers are only about five per cent of the total. Total retail sales amount to £3.4bn.
