There are over 10 million cattle in the UK, which is the fourth largest producer in the EU-25 at more than 750,000 tonnes of beef a year. UK consumers eat an average of 17.3kg of beef a year. France is the largest EU producer at 1.6 million tonnes a year while the biggest producer of all is the United States – it generates 12 million tonnes, nearly a quarter of world production.
