The Food Standards Agency has released a factsheet to combat the spread of bacterial infection listeriosis, which can be found on cooked, sliced meat and smoked salmon. Listeria

can thrive at refrigeration temperatures and the FSA said chilled food must be kept cold and eaten by their use-by dates.

A sausage manufacturer is hoping for success with the launch of new henna-tattooed sausages. Mr Singh's Bangras has worked together with branding consultant The Partners to launch the sausages by the end of the year. The henna tattoo will remain on the skin of the sausage after cooking and is completely edible, said the firm.

The international meat industry is gearing up for the 17th World Meat Congress, to be held in Cape Town, South Africa, from 7-10 September. The event will feature speakers from across the meat spectrum as well as government ministers from Brazil, Australia, the European Union and South Africa.

Representatives of the farming industry have launched an appeal to help Africa's farmers and meat rearers to produce better crops. For the Africa 100 appeal, the NFU and agricultural charity FARM-Africa are hoping to persuade the UK farming industry to donate to projects in East Africa that use the latest farming technology. NFU president Peter Kendall said: "This is an opportune moment for farmers to acknowledge there is an urgent need to help develop Third World agriculture. I would urge the farming industry to give generously to the Africa 100 Appeal."

The countdown has begun to the eleventh annual British Sausage Week, from 3-9 November, and organiser BPEX is looking for sausages that pay homage to Britain. The regional influence can be anything from the locally sourced ingredients, the name or even the inspiration behind the recipe.
